Communication Problems in Maltreated Children: A TutorialThe University of Akron Akron, OH Speech/language problems have frequently been noted in the delayed development of maltreated children. Yet, the exact role which abuse and/or neglect plays in the communication disorder is often unclear. The purpose of this paper is to examine available information on the interactional environment, the general developmental consequences, as well as the specific speech and language problems associated with the maltreatment of children. The results of selected studies suggest the presence of language problems, particularly the possibility of language difficulties in neglected children.
