Evaluating Velopharyngeal IncompetenceAlbert Einstein College of Medicine Numerous procedures and techniques for the treatment of velopharyngeal insufficiency (VPI) have been suggested over the past century, and the development of new procedures continues unabated. The emphasis on the success or failure in treatment has been the relative merits of each of these procedures, whether they be surgical, prosthetic, or therapeutic. It is more appropriate to place the emphasis on the indications for those procedures so that success or failure is dependent upon adequate diagnosis. The purpose of this article is to discuss what constitutes state-of-the-art in the diagnosis of VPI and how the results of this diagnosis affects treatment planning.
